Bork Havn sits at the innermost end of Ringkøbing Fjord, where the marina, the viking harbour and the cabin park lie close together. It is one of the places in West Jutland where the season is shortest and most concentrated: guests come in particular weeks around the summer holidays and the festival, and for the rest of the year many houses stand empty. We live in the middle of it, and our address in Nørre Bork is a few minutes from the harbour, the cabin park and Hemmet alike.

It is a different job from out on the North Sea coast. The houses here sit by the fjord rather than in the dunes, so there is less drifting sand and salt haze on the glass. The fjord gives its own instead: pollen and bird droppings on the panes in spring, and houses that have stood cold and shut through the months without guests. So airing, damp checks and a proper look through cupboards and mattresses matter more here than getting salt off windows does.

Living in the zone means two concrete things. One is that an extra house on the Saturday route costs no driving time, which makes it easier to fit in. The other is response time: if there is a water leak, or a guest has left something unexpected, we are not ninety minutes away. For a holiday home that is let out, that is usually what decides whether a bad Saturday turns into a bad review.
