Changeover cleaning: how to make your holiday home guest-ready every time
There is nothing more stressful than a changeover day in high season. The old guests check out at 10:00, the new ones are at the door at 17:00, and between those two times the whole house has to be made guest-ready. This is where a rental is won or lost. A well-planned changeover clean is the difference between five-star reviews and an annoyed message about sand in the bed.
Why the changeover matters so much
Guests form their impression in the first two minutes. They open the door, breathe in and look at the bathroom. If the house smells clean and the surfaces shine, the rest of the stay is already coloured positively. If there is hair in the shower or grease on the stove, they look for faults for the rest of the week. Consistency is what protects your reviews, and consistency only comes from a fixed workflow.
The efficient workflow step by step
We always work top to bottom, and from the furthest room toward the door, so we never walk back over something we have just cleaned.
- Air out immediately. Open windows throughout the house while you work. Fresh air removes the stuffy feeling that otherwise greets the guest at the door.
- Strip the linen and towels. Gather everything dirty for washing and make the beds with fresh sheets. Tight, smooth beds are one of the first things guests photograph.
- Kitchen in detail. Stove, inside of the oven, extractor filter, fridge, microwave and coffee machine. Check drawers and cupboards for crumbs and forgotten food.
- Descale the bathroom. Tiles, fixtures, shower head and toilet. Limescale from the hard West Jutland water builds up fast and looks sloppy.
- Dust, vacuum and mop. Remember corners, skirting boards and under the sofa, where beach sand collects.
- Empty all the bins and fit fresh bags. Lay out a spare roll of toilet paper per bathroom.
The details guests always notice
It is rarely the big things that cost a star. It is hair in the drain, a sticky remote control, a microwave with old food splatter or a dishwasher that smells. Always check these five points last, before you leave the house. Together they take under ten minutes and often save the review.
Common mistakes that cost time and stars
The most common mistake is underestimating the time. A 100 square metre house with two bathrooms cannot be made properly guest-ready in half an hour. Another classic is forgetting the outside: the terrace, the grill and the entrance are the first and last things the guest sees. Finally, people skip the descaling because it is not obvious at first glance. But the next guest spots it straight away.
In the holiday areas around Hvide Sande, Søndervig, Henne Strand, Nymindegab and Blåvand, changeovers are often squeezed onto Saturdays, and the agencies run tight schedules. That is why we always recommend a fixed checklist tailored to your specific house, so no detail is left to memory on a busy day.
Access, keys and the small things that save the day
Coastal changeover work also has its own logistics. In the dense holiday clusters around Hvide Sande, Søndervig and Blåvand, many houses are let through agencies on the same Saturday rhythm, so coordinating arrival times and key handover across several properties in one zone is a normal part of the operational reality, not an afterthought. The smoothest changeovers are the ones where access is sorted in advance. A key box with a fixed code, a clear note about where to find spare linen, and an agreed arrival window all remove friction on the day. We also keep an eye on the things that are easy to miss between guests but cheap to handle: a fresh roll of toilet paper, a quick check of light bulbs, a wiped coffee machine and a glance at the welcome basket if you offer one. These are tiny gestures, but they are exactly what turns a satisfied guest into one who writes a warm review and books again next year. Over a full season, those small touches add up to a measurable difference in your ratings and your repeat bookings.
