Keep the sand out of the holiday home: the tricks that work by the beach

Live by the beach and the sand comes inside. It settles in floor grooves, in the bed, in the bathroom and everywhere you do not expect. You never fully escape it, but with a few simple moves you can keep most of it out and make cleaning far easier.

Stop the sand at the door

The most important thing happens at the entrance. A coarse coir mat outside and a softer mat inside catch most of it. Put a small brush or a bucket of water by the door so feet and shoes can be cleaned before going in. A shoe rack outside, where sandy shoes stay, makes a big difference.

Pay special attention to the bathroom

Sand and showers are a bad combination: it ends up in the drain and can block it. Rinse feet outside or in an outdoor shower, if the house has one, before you shower. A strainer over the drain catches the rest and is easy to empty.

The right equipment makes the difference

A vacuum with good suction is worth gold by the beach, ideally one that can handle fine sand without clogging. For the floors a slightly damp mop works better than a dry one, because it gathers the sand instead of spreading it. Shake rugs and mats outside regularly and they will not collect piles of sand.

Good habits for guests

If you rent the house out, it helps to write a few friendly lines in the house folder: rinse feet before coming in, shoes stay at the door, shake beach towels outside. Most guests happily do it when reminded, and the house stays nicer all week.

On changeover cleans, sand is one of the things we spend the most time on by the coast, and we know where it hides. We clean the house thoroughly between guests, so the next party steps into a house with no sand underfoot at all.
