The birds of Ringkøbing Fjord: the great spring migration right outside the door

In spring something special happens at Ringkøbing Fjord. Thousands of birds gather in the shallow water and on the meadows, some to breed, others to rest on their long journey north. It is one of Northern Europe's most important bird sites, and it lies right outside the door if you holiday in our part of West Jutland.

Why the birds gather here

Ringkøbing Fjord is a shallow lagoon with brackish water, meadows and reed beds. The shallow water and wet meadows are an enormous larder for wading birds, ducks and geese. In spring, migratory birds use the fjord as a resting place on the way to breeding grounds further north, and many also stay here to breed. That is why you can see huge flocks at once.

Tipperne, the protected corner

At the far south of the fjord lies Tipperne, a peninsula of meadows that is one of the country's oldest bird reserves. The area is so important that access is limited to protect the birds, but in season you can visit at set times. It is one of the best places in Denmark to experience bird life up close.

What you can see

Depending on the season you see large flocks of wading birds such as dunlins and godwits, geese, ducks and birds of prey hunting over the meadows. Spring and autumn are the most dramatic, when migration is at its peak. Bring binoculars and move quietly.

How to experience it best

There are bird towers and good viewpoints around the fjord, including at Tipperne and along the coast. Come early in the morning or late in the day, when the birds are most active. Stay on the paths and keep your distance so you do not startle them. It is an experience for birdwatchers and children alike.
