How to clean your oven without harsh chemicals

Few things in a kitchen look more neglected than an oven caked with burnt-on grease. And few things are checked as carefully by a landlord at a move-out inspection, or by a guest who wants to bake a pizza in the holiday home. The good news is that you do not need the harsh, caustic oven sprays with warning triangles to get it clean. A simple paste of baking soda and water does the work almost by itself, if you give it time.

Why avoid the harsh products

Classic oven spray often contains strong lye that gives off powerful fumes in a closed space. It is unpleasant to work with, tough on the hands and not something you want sitting in an oven that will later heat your food. Baking soda, by contrast, is cheap, odourless and completely safe to handle, and it removes grease surprisingly well because it is mildly abrasive and lifts the grime off the surface.

The baking-soda method step by step

  • Take out the racks. Soak them in warm water with a little dish soap while you work on the oven itself.
  • Mix a paste. Combine about half a cup of baking soda with enough water to make a thick, spreadable mass.
  • Spread the paste over the entire inside of the oven. Avoid the heating elements. Be extra generous where the grease is thickest.
  • Let it work. Give it at least a couple of hours, ideally overnight. The waiting time is what makes the gentle product effective.
  • Wipe it off. Use a damp cloth or sponge to remove the now dark paste. Most of the grease comes with it.
  • Spray with vinegar. A little vinegar water makes any baking-soda residue foam slightly, and you wipe it all away to a shiny surface.

For the glass door, an extra portion of paste and a little patience with a plastic scraper will remove even the stubborn film without scratching the glass.

Why landlords always check the oven

The oven is a good indicator of how thoroughly the rest of the home has been cleaned. If the oven is sparkling clean, it signals that the tenant took inspection-ready cleaning seriously. If it is greasy, the landlord often assumes the extractor hood, cabinets and corners are sloppy too. That is why the oven is one of the points we always prioritise during move-out cleaning in Varde, Esbjerg, Skjern and Tarm. In rental apartments around Varde and Esbjerg in particular, grease trapped between the panes of the oven door glass is one of the most common things we deal with, so where the door design allows it we take the door apart and clean the inner glass properly rather than just wiping the outside. A clean oven is cheap insurance against a failed inspection.

The eco-friendly angle

The gentle approach is not only better for your hands and your indoor air, it is also better for nature. In our regular work we use eco-friendly Ecolab products that are effective but gentle, precisely because we believe a clean home and a clean environment should not exclude each other. You rarely need the strongest product to get the best result.

Keeping the oven clean between deep cleans

The reason ovens reach the caked-on stage is almost always neglect, not bad luck. A little maintenance keeps the big jobs away. Wipe up spills while the oven is still slightly warm, before they bake on layer after layer. Use a baking tray or a sheet of foil on the rack below anything likely to bubble over, especially gratins and roasts. And run a quick baking-soda wipe every month or two rather than waiting for the annual horror. In a rented holiday home, this matters even more, because the oven sees heavy, varied use from guests who will not treat it gently. Naming it explicitly in your house guide, a simple please wipe the oven after use, sets the expectation and reduces how much grease builds up before your next changeover or deep clean in Bork, Tarm or wherever the house sits.
