Amber hunting at the West Coast: gold on the beach after the autumn storm

There is something special about walking the beach after an autumn storm. The sea has been wild all night, and when it settles, new things lie in the belt of seaweed along the waterline. Sometimes there is gold among it: amber. Amber hunting is one of the true West Jutland traditions, and autumn and winter are the best time for it.

Why right after a storm

Amber is fossilised resin from forests that stood here millions of years ago. It is light, almost as light as water, so a strong storm stirs it up from the seabed and washes it toward the shore. The best days are therefore right after a westerly storm, ideally at low tide, when the seaweed gathers in long bands on the beach. It is in and around that seaweed you should look.

How to tell amber from a stone

Amber often looks like a yellow-brown, semi-transparent stone, but there are a few signs: it is very light and feels warm rather than cold like an ordinary stone. It glows when the sun is behind it. And an old trick: amber floats in salt water. If you bring a bucket of heavily salted water, you can test your finds on the spot. Whatever floats is worth a closer look.

A trip for the whole family

The lovely thing about amber hunting is that it costs nothing and suits everyone. Children love the treasure hunt, and even a walk without finds is a good reason to get out into the fresh coastal air in winter. Wear warm clothes, rubber boots and bring a small bag, and walk slowly along the waterline with your eyes on the seaweed.

Where and when

The whole west coast from Blåvand to Hvide Sande is amber coast. Go hunting early in the morning after a windy night, before others arrive, and watch the weather: a fresh westerly wind in the days before is the best sign. Remember that beach and dune are protected nature, so only pick up loose amber and leave the seaweed, plants and wildlife alone.

At IT IS DONE we live by the coast ourselves, and we know how much the small things matter for a holiday: a piece of amber on the windowsill, a clear view, a clean house. We take care of the cleaning so you can spend your time on the beach.
