Summer by the coast: spend it on the beach, not on mopping

You did not buy a holiday home by the North Sea to stand around with a mop bucket. You bought it for the long evenings when the sun sets over the dunes, for the morning coffee on the terrace and for the walks down to the beach where the sand is still cool. Yet many stays end up with a large part of the time spent keeping house, because sand, salt and damp from the coast work against you every single day.

Why a coastal house demands more

A holiday home close to the sea gets dirty faster than a house inland. Sand comes in on feet and in bags, the salt in the air leaves a film on windows and surfaces, and the damp means the house has to be aired and maintained or it starts to smell stuffy. This rhythm protects the value of the property itself, not just its appearance: floors last longer, fittings corrode less, and that musty smell never gets a chance to take hold. What you can actually fit into a week

Pencil them in loosely, not firmly. West Jutland summer weather changes fast enough that a plan made on Sunday evening rarely survives to Wednesday. The best rhythm is deciding in the morning, when you can see what the sky is doing.

The wet day, which always comes

There will be one. It is easier if something is already in the house rather than having to be invented in the rain.

• A couple of games and a jigsaw that need neither power nor signal.
• Paint and stones for the West Jutland classic: painting a stone at the kitchen table.
• A museum within twenty minutes' drive, chosen in advance.
• Ingredients for something that takes time to cook, because cooking is an activity when it rains.

The wind is not the enemy

People coming here for the first time often spend a couple of days annoyed by the wind, and then work out that it is part of the deal rather than a fault in the weather.

Practically there is a lot you can do. A windbreak or a dune at your back changes everything, and most beaches here have both if you walk sixty metres to one side rather than sitting where the path ends. A simple beach windbreak is the best small purchase of a summer week on this coast.

And then there are the days when the wind is the whole point. Kite flying, surfing at Hvide Sande, and simply standing and watching when the sea is big. That is the sort of thing people remember from a week down here, not the three hours of calm.
