How to Remove Limescale in the Bathroom Without Ruining Taps, Glass and Stone

Water in West Jutland is hard, and limescale builds up faster than most people expect. The good news: you need neither expensive products nor hard scrubbing. You just have to avoid the mistakes that quietly destroy taps, glass and stone.

Use citric acid, not vinegar

Forget the vinegar. Citric acid powder dissolved in warm water is stronger, cheaper per use, odourless and food-safe. Mix a few tablespoons into half a litre of warm (not boiling) water, because warmth dissolves calcium far faster than cold.

The vertical surface is the problem: a horizontal tap or a shower glass panel cannot hold liquid against it. The trick is to lay kitchen paper or a cloth soaked in the citric solution directly ON the surface, like a compress, so it stays in contact for 15 to 30 minutes.

  • Shower head: tie a bag of warm citric solution around the head and leave it overnight. Run hot water through it afterwards.
  • Always rinse and dry after descaling. Residue left to dry re-deposits as a fresh film.

The surfaces you must NEVER touch with acid

Never use acid, neither vinegar, citric acid nor descaler, on natural stone such as marble or travertine. It etches permanently and cannot be undone. If you do not know the surface, test a small, hidden spot first.

Be careful with acid on worn chrome, anodised aluminium and old taps too. It can dull the finish or leave tiny pits. Keep contact time short and rinse thoroughly.

Safety: never mix acid with chlorine or bleach. It releases toxic chlorine gas.

The habit that removes 90 percent of the problem

Here is the secret nobody talks about: keep a squeegee in the shower and pull it across the glass and tiles after every single shower. Limescale forms when mineral-rich water dries on the surface. Remove the water and you remove the scale before it ever appears.
