Bork Viking Harbour: a journey 1000 years back right by the fjord
Right here, where we are based ourselves at Nørre Bork, lies one of the finest day trips in the local area: Bork Viking Harbour. It is a reconstructed harbour and village from the Viking Age, built where a trading place actually stood over a thousand years ago. You literally step into the past.
What the place is
Bork Viking Harbour is an open-air museum at the innermost part of Ringkøbing Fjord. Here are thatched longhouses, stalls, a harbour with wooden boats and fields, all built as in the Viking Age. The place tells the story of how people here traded, dwelt and lived a thousand years ago, precisely because the fjord gave access to the sea and the rest of the world.
What you can experience
In season there is often living interpretation: people dressed as Vikings showing old crafts such as blacksmithing, cooking over fire and boat building. Children can try things with their hands, and there is plenty of room to run. Even outside the staffed days it is an atmospheric place to walk and see the houses and the harbour.
Perfect for a windy day
A visit suits a day when the beach is too windy. It is close by for anyone staying in a holiday home around Bork, Hemmet and the fjord, and it gives children and adults a completely different kind of experience than the coast. Check opening hours and activity days in advance, as they change with the season.
History right outside the door
The lovely thing about holidaying here is that history lies right outside the door. The Viking harbour reminds us that this quiet corner by the fjord was once connected to all of Northern Europe by water.
We live and work here by Bork, and we happily recommend the place to guests in the houses we look after. We take care of the cleaning, so you can spend the day exploring in the footsteps of the Vikings.
