Clean windows by the sea: when the view is half the holiday

Nobody rents a holiday home by the North Sea for the walls. You rent it for the view: the dunes, the light, the sea on the horizon and the sun pouring in first thing in the morning. But right here, close to the beach, salt and sand settle on the windows fast, and suddenly you are looking at the world through a grey haze instead of through glass. Clean windows are not decoration. They are the whole point of being by the sea.

Why windows by the beach get dirty so fast

The closer the house sits to the beach and the dunes, the quicker it happens. The wind carries fine sand and a light film of salt from the sea spray, and it settles on the glass day after day. You do not always notice at once, but when the morning sun comes in at an angle, that dull film shows clearly. For houses right out by the dunes, the panes can look visibly dirty again in under a week. It is not because anyone did anything wrong. That is simply what living this close to the sea is like.

Clean glass, whole experience

Something happens when the glass is clean. The light gets sharper, the colours in the dune grass come alive, and the sea sits clear on the horizon instead of behind a haze. You feel it straight away in the morning: the sun fills the living room and the house feels bright and welcoming. A clean pane is the difference between looking at a window and looking out at nature.

For guests it matters even more

If you rent the house out, the windows are one of the first things guests notice. They step in, walk to the big window facing the dunes and take a breath. If the glass is clean, the holiday has already begun. If it is clouded with salt and fingerprints, the house feels a little neglected, no matter how clean everything else is. Clean windows mean better holiday photos, happier guests and the five stars that come from everything simply feeling right.

When in the year it matters most

There are two moments when clean glass makes the biggest difference, and they sit at opposite ends of the season.

The first is spring, just before the first guest. The house has stood shut all winter and the panes carry a whole autumn and winter of salt. That is the one round that lifts the house most, and it is also the one that produces the best photographs for the listing.

The second is autumn, when the light drops. From September the sun comes in at such an angle through the west-facing panes that any film on the glass shows. A house that looked fine in July can look grey in October with nothing changed except the position of the light.

Inside and outside are two different jobs

Inside is about fingerprints, cooking grease and dust, and it can be done any time. Outside is about salt and sand, and that is the side that decides what the view looks like.

So doing only one rarely makes sense. If the inside is clean and the outside is hazy, the pane still looks dirty, and you have spent the time without getting the result. We normally do both sides the same day, and that is also how it comes out cheapest.

If the house has roof windows, they belong to the outside round. They are nearly always forgotten, and they are the first thing a guest looks up at from the sofa.

You do not have to stand on the ladder yourself

Very few people dream of spending a holiday day with a ladder, a bucket and streaks that never quite disappear. And by the sea it has to be done often. That is exactly the sort of thing we take off your hands. We clean the windows inside and out, so clean it is as if there is no glass in the frame at all. You just enjoy the view.

What you can do yourself in between

Between two professional rounds there are two things that keep the glass looking good longer, and neither takes more than a couple of minutes.

The first is rinsing. A garden hose over the outside panes after a windy day removes the salt before it dries on as a film. That is not cleaning, it is maintenance, and it pushes the next proper round noticeably further out.

The second is the frames. Sand in the frame gets blown back onto the glass at the next gust, so a pass there with a brush or a vacuum does more for the view than a cloth on the pane itself.

What you must not do is wipe a dry, sandy pane. That is the one mistake that leaves permanent scratches.

One sad little downside of really clean glass

There is one drawback to truly clean windows, and it genuinely makes us sad. When the glass is perfectly clear, birds sometimes cannot see it, and they fly into the pane. It is one of the moments we would most like to avoid. If you have a window where it happens often, you can help the birds with small stickers, lines or silhouettes on the glass, or by leaving a blind half down. That way you keep the view and protect the birds at the same time.
